Volume 2 January - March 2010 Number 1

2010District 19 would like to extend a warm Happy New Year to all. This month we take a look back at some of the events of 2009 and highlight some of the events coming for 2010. 2009 was host to many events filled with warm fellowship, great food, laughs and enlightenment. As we look forward to 2010 we hope to expand on these opportunities for members to grow, get to know one another and have a great time in sobriety.

Members of the Alano group would like to extend a thank you to all who supported them by attending its annual New Year’s Eve Dinner Auction. The Easy Does It Club also extends a thank you to all who supported them by attending their New Year’s Breakfast.

As its name states “The Journey Continues” is gearing up for its annual Big Book Conference to be held at the Route 66 Hotel on January 22-24. If you have not attended this event now is the time to register by downloading the registration form and mailing it in! As usual the conference features an in depth study of the Big Book presented by Don B. and James L. accompanied by Speakers, Alcathons, Hospitality Room and wrapped up by a Banquet Dinner.

New for 2010, District 19 will be hosting the 2010 Southern Illinois Area 21 Spring Conference on March 12-14. This event brings together people from throughout Southern Illinois and features Speakers, Panels, AA, Alanon, and Alateen Meetings, Hospitality Room and unique opportunities for fellowship. Be sure to download the registration form if you plan on attending this event.

District 19 will also be hosting Spring and Fall events. In 2009 District hosted a Fall picnic which brought together many alcoholics and their families for a fun filled day of games, fellowship, and food rounded off by a Speaker. Be sure to watch the Event Calendar for this years events.

Along with the District Events 2009 saw many picnics, barbeques, movie nights, and other unique opportunities to grow, fellowship and enjoy sobriety hosted by the many groups and clubs that make up District 19. Many of these events are annual events that have become traditions to the members that attend. The Annual Gratitude Meeting hosted by the Easy Does it Club changed locations this past year due to overcrowding in the previous years. This is an awesome example of how the fellowship is growing here in Central Illinois as we continue to carry the message.

The District Website Committee is committed to keeping you up to date on upcoming events, news and information. Please remember to bookmark our site and visit regularly. Our Newsletter Page will be updated on a quarterly basis for 2010. Our Calendar will continue to be updated on a regular basis as the information is received.

****Cherry & Bates ~ Big Book Study****

This type of A.A. group is rumored as existing, let me tell you it still does. At this particular meeting you see more than your average “elder statesmen” and ne’r a “bleeding deacon” (as the 12X12 calls old-timers).

In this group, there is a seriousness and a sense of growth that is consistent meeting in meeting out. Yes, there are a fair share of new-comers. And, yes, there is a laugh or two, but we are reminded every Thursday, at 8 PM, that if you don’t take the first drink, you won’t get drunk.

This group, The Big Book Study started about twenty years ago in a church in Edinburg. Some of the first A.A’s at that meeting were Dick G. and Carl H. Even Steve L. ventured over there once. When the meeting moved up here, it met in peoples homes-this was not so uncommon then and has made me wonder if the first “home groups” were like that-smaller and held in homes. Wendell was responsible for helping the group, which had grown, find it’s current location, the church’s basement on Cherry & Bates.

About every third time I attend, someone who is in probably the first five or ten years of sobriety claims, “This is the BEST MEETING IN TOWN”. Why, do you ask? Because it studies the Big Book. This meeting goes through the entire first 164 pages, plus the Roman Numerals about twice a year. To hear an A.A. tell you what he has learned the words to mean, which that A.A. probably learned from another old timer, makes for a fuller understanding of sharing experience of strength and hope. The group has just started over in the book, so it’s a great time to check in for a while or even longer.

Not So Mighty Anymore

In keeping with the 7th tradition which states: "Every A.A. group ought to be fully self supporting, declining outside contributions" District 19 would like to remind you that A buck in the basket does not go quite as far as it used to. In fact The Almighty Dollar in 2005 was worth approximately 16 cents at 1963 prices.

Please keep this in mind when passing the basket and remember that your contributions go to ensure that the message is carried on to the Alcoholic who still suffers just as it was so freely passed on to you.

November/December 2009 Bridging the Gap Newsletter

Here's What's Going On:

  • As you can see from the top of this edition of the newsletter this is for both November and December as we will NOT be having a meeting for either of these months.  Also it has been decided to change the meeting time to 6:15, this will hopefully open up opportunities for more people to join or attend.  So the next meeting will be January 28th, 2010 in the basement of the Alano at 6:15.  We are taking nominations for those who have 2 years of continuous sobriety to become Vice Chair of BTG. Looking forward to sharing this great experience with someone.

  • This month’s meeting attendance was down to only 7 people.  With the New Year it is the hope of the group that many people will show an interest and begin coming (along with bringing interested individuals with them).

  • Rides have really caught on at Triangle.  Those in treatment are utilizing the list and contacting members of AA for rides.

  • BTG will be having a table at the Gratitude Meeting, if you can sit for any length of time let Pam know. By the way this year Gratitude Meeting is at Hope church. Find a map at your meeting place.

  • The books “Living Sober” and also “Came to Believe” were discussed about being used at beginner’s meetings.

  • Calvin M. is working on getting Gateway to change the required two years of sobriety to come and speak to something less so that more people can volunteer.

  • Both Gateway and Triangle overall have had good meeting attendance and continue to do very well.

  • We are in need of facilitators for the full month of Jan. 2010 for every facility. Please contact Pam and put your service to work.

Volunteering

  • Triangle Center groups are every Saturday from 1 until 2 p.m.  They require one person to have two or more years of sobriety the rest of the panel does not need to have a certain amount of sobriety.  In November the 7th will be facilitated by Warren A., the 21st will be Bud H., and the 28th will be Lynn P.  On December 5th Pam and Marcia will be facilitating and on the 19th it will be Budd.

  • Gateway groups are the first and third Sunday of every month from 6:30 until 8 p.m.  They do ask that those coming in to speak have two or more years of sobriety.  November the 1st Shaun C. will be facilitating a group and Donna S. will be on the 15th of November.  In December Pam and Randy L. will be going on the 6th and Charla  will be facilitating on the 20th.

  • Please contact B.L.  if you are a man who would like to either facilitate or be a part of a group that goes into the Salvation Army ARC on the last Saturday of the month from 6 until 7 p.m.

  • McFarland’s is on Monday evenings.  Please contact Dan C. if you are willing to go to McFarland’s so that you can get the proper paperwork needed.

Please make sure that I (Amber E.), Pam S., or Ruth W. has all of your contact information.  If your information has changed recently, contact Pam or Amber to look at the most recent updated contact form to make sure we have you updated.  If you have signed up and have not been called by a facilitator please watch news letter and contact the facilitator on the day you may be able to help out.

Please feel free to contact info@aaspringfield.org if you need to get forms or anything else! We want you to feel a part of this group! If you are feeling left out than reach out and we can better help you. Thanks for all that you do and please remember that our next BTG meeting will be the Easy Does It Club on October 29 at 6:45 . Please come and bring someone along! The more the merrier!

“Service” is the Secret.  “Unity”  in the community.   “Recovery” plant a seed
